Our History and future

October 1, 2008, Hepatitis Information Center established at Kohnodai Hospital, National Center for Global Health and Medicine.

"Hepatitis Information Center Concept" of 2007 was as follows: In order to promote uniformity of hepatitis treatment and improvement of medical standards nationwide, a system to support regional collaborative base hospitals for liver disease treatment is necessary, especially for information dissemination functions, and the infrastructure should be established. Furthermore, basic and clinical research on hepatitis is progressing rapidly both in Japan and overseas, making it important to create a database of information and update the information regularly. In addition, a system to disseminate such accurate information widely should be created.

Based on the above Hepatitis Information Center Concept, the Hepatitis Information Center was established at Kohnodai Hospital, National Center for Global Health and Medicine on October 1, 2008. Its main roles are as follows.

  1. Providing information on hepatitis treatment and setting up a website,
  2. Supporting the information sharing among collaborative base hospitals for hepatitis treatment,
  3. Organizing training sessions for medical staffs at collaborative base hospitals, etc.

Hepatitis Information Center has played a significant role in promoting the liver disease care system in Japan.

Strategic strengthening since 2016 in Hepatitis Information Center

The Administrative Operations Disclosure Process for Collaborative Base Hospital Project for Liver Disease Care was implemented in June 2015. In the process, it was proposed that "correcting disparities among base hospitals," "strengthening functions of Hepatitis Information Center," "examining ways to correct disparities in the hospital visit rate of positive carriers," and "reviewing KPIs (performance indicators)" are necessary. Consequently, the role of Hepatitis Information Center has largely been revised to strengthen the liver disease treatment system. The objective of the revision is specifically to "improve the quality of hepatitis treatment in the region by strategically strengthening Hepatitis Information Center, significantly enhancing the support system for base hospitals, and strengthening the network of liver disease treatment at the regional level". The following new projects were decided to be implemented.

  1. Strengthening the support system for base hospitals by Hepatitis Information Center,
  2. Enhancement of the regional network for liver disease treatment,
  3. PDCA cycle through the establishment of multiple KPIs (performance indicators),

From 2023, in order to achieve uniformity in hepatitis care, implementation of hepatitis control measures in prefectures is to be monitored and evaluated based on indicators, plus the implementation of support for prefectures to establish a cooperative system with base hospitals and local healthcare facilities for liver disease treatment.

Future Role of Hepatitis Information Center

Based on these reviews, the role of Hepatitis Information Center in the "Strategic Strengthening Project for the Hepatitis Information Center," which is centered on human resource support, information support, and policy outreach, is as follows.

  • To implement strategically enhanced support projects in order to improve the role of specialized medical institutions and key hospitals of liver disease treatment networks within prefectures, as well as consultation and support for hepatitis patients.
  • To implement public awareness programs to encourage a wide range of generations to receive and undergo medical examinations through a variety of public relations.
